Abstract

Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is expected to enhance the machinability of the difficult-to-cut materials. In this paper, LAM of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) using a UV laser (Nd-YAG laser of 355nm) is proposed as its abrasion feature would enhance the machinablity. Y-TZP is a ceramic expected to be used as a biomaterial due to its superior characteristics. The orthogonal cutting experiments using the UV laser were conducted. The depth-of-cut in proposed machining is the micrometer order. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method on machinability, specific cutting force, surface integrity and tool wear were investigated. As a result, in the specific cutting force and the surface roughness (the maximum height), the effectiveness was unclear. However, large cracks quantity was reduced and tool wear was diminished in the proposed method compared to the result of the machining without using UV laser.
