Abstract
The study of the subsea soil is one of the main activities for the subsea field development. This chapter gives a brief introduction to subsea soil, including the subsea survey, positioning, and soil investigation. In addition, the minimal functional and technical requirements for the subsea soil issue are provided, which can be used as a general reference to help subsea engineers make decisions. As part of the planned field development, a detailed geophysical and geotechnical field development survey and a soil investigation based on the survey results are discussed. The purpose of the survey is to identify potential human-made hazards, natural hazards, and engineering constraints when selecting a subsea field area; to assess the potential impact on biological communities; and to determine the seabed and subbottom conditions.
