Abstract
Polymer modifications and multi-material constructions are considered essential for future technology developments. Functional fluoropolymers are established in multi-layer hoses for their chemical resistance and barrier properties. Beyond that the chemical reactivity of novel ETFE and PFA grades offer new opportunities in the design of high performance polymer blends, advanced composites or multi-material sandwich constructions such as PCBs. This chapter gives an overview of how functional fluoropolymers can be used as modifiers for engineering and high performance polymers to reduce water absorption and increase impact strength. In combination with PTFE as tribological additive, functional fluoropolymers can support compatibility with the base polymer and reduce losses in mechanical properties. The reactivity allows fibre-matrix adhesion to carbon or glass fibres in composites or fibre reinforced compounds for better mechanical properties. Unique dielectric properties of functional PFA paired with its adhesion characteristics allows advanced solutions for high speed data transfer in high frequency applications.
