Abstract
Anaerobic digestion is a well-established technology for recovering clean bioenergy in the form of methane gas from many types of organic waste. As microalgae can grow rapidly and convert solar energy into biomass without the need for arable lands, methane production from microalgae via anaerobic digestion can be an attractive option for sustainable biofuel production. Although research on the anaerobic digestion of microalgae has increased in recent years and is still in its primary stages, there are clear findings to support this approach’s viability. This chapter reviews recent developments in anaerobic digestion technology applied to microalgae biomass; the following topics are discussed: special biomass features compared to other substrates, the anaerobic biodegradability of different microalgae strains and/or species, process performances in different reactor operations, a comparison of different physicochemical pretreatments on the enhancement of methane recovery, nutrient recovery from anaerobic digestate for value-added products, and future research needs for commercialization.
