Abstract

The use of ultrasound in the practice of emergency medicine has grown dramatically over the last two decades. Published surveys have established the prevalence of bedside ultrasound use, training requirements, and incorporation of quality assurance measures at academic emergency medicine programs. Only one study has attempted to assess the use of ultrasound outside of academic emergency medicine centers. The results of this study, however, may be biased by a low (61%) survey response rate. In our study we sought to determine the current status of emergency physician-performed bedside ultrasound at both academic and community centers in the state of California.
