Abstract

The tendency to stabilize low oxidation states of transition metals in compounds containing complex anions and monoatomic nonmetal ligands increases with the ligand sequence F− → O2− → N3− → C4−. In the case of nitridometalates, the oxidation states of the transition metals reach the low level of +1 (in some cases, even <+1), characterized by the formation of complex anions in the form of dumbbells, infinite chains (various conformations), and layers. Preparative aspects are discussed in detail, together with substitution szenarios, crystal structures, chemical bonding, and physical properties. Future trends include the role of carbon during nitridometalate synthesis.
