Abstract

Recently, the flapping mechanisms such as insects and birds are investigated for the development of MAV technology. We experimented two methods in order to analyze flapping mechanism. The one way is fluid force measurement using by six component force load cells in a low speed wind tunnel. Another one way is visualization tests such as surface tuft method and injection streak line method using fog generator for a flapping elliptical wing varying flapping amplitude and frequency. From the results of these experiments, we have confirmed that, flapping motion raises lift coefficients and there is a leading edge vortex and wing tip vortex generated over the wing upper surface, moreover these vortices varies with flapping motion.
