Abstract

Satisfaction outcomes for patients and partners undergoing inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) placement have been shown to be consistently superior to conservative and alternative treatment options. Those who have previously undergone placement of a malleable (MPP) or 2-piece prosthesis may benefit similarly from an IPP exchange. Reasons to consider revision may include anticipated completion of salvage therapy following a previous infection, device malfunction, poor concealment, or dissatisfaction with sexual performance. While these patients may anticipate an improvement in quality of life, there is a paucity of data to establish patient satisfaction after the replacement of a MPP or 2-piece implant with a 3-piece IPP. We aim to report post-operative patient satisfaction scores following replacement of a malleable or 2-piece penile prosthesis with an inflatable penile implant. A retrospective chart review of patients undergoing penile implantation by two prosthetic surgeons from April 2015- June 2018 was performed. All revision cases in which a MPP or two-piece penile implant was replaced by an IPP were considered. We excluded any patients who had not yet undergone device activation. Patients were then contacted via telephone and asked to participate in the patient version of the 11-item Erectile Dysfunction Inventory of Treatment Satisfaction (EDITS) questionnaire. A Likert-style scale was applied with scores of 4 (greatest satisfaction) to 0 (poor satisfaction). Total scores were obtained in the usual fashion by multiplying the mean of all answered items by 25. A separate, additional question (“Compared to your previous implant, how would you rate your quality of life with your current implant?”) was asked and assigned a 0-4 Likert scaling.
