Abstract

In order to investigate the effect of low temperature gas nitriding on high cycle fatigue properties of SUS316L austenitic stainless steel, rotating bending fatigue tests were carried out for three specimens with different treatments: They were gas nitrided at 420℃, 460℃ and 570℃, respectively. As the fatigue tests result, fatigue properties were improved by the nitriding. The fatigue strength increases with an increase in the thickness of the diffusion layer. Although the fatigue life was extended by the nitriding, a dispersion of the fatigue life data spread wide with an increase in the thickness of the diffusion layer. The reason for the dispersion of the fatigue life data was the scatter of fatigue crack initiation life until a half fatigue crack length at about 0.1mm.
