Abstract

Purpose of this study is to establish a defect detecting method by using piezoelectric polymer film (PVDFfilm). PVDF film has piezoelectricity, produces electric potential according to the deformation. This electric potential as a voltage value was measured with the aid of an ultra-high impedance surface potential voltmeter.PVDF films and the strain gauges were bonded on the reverse side of a specimen with an artificial defect. In the experiments, the output voltage distribution from PVDF films and strain distribution by strain gauges on the specimen subjected to cyclic load were measured, respectively. As a result, it was observed a similar tendency such that the output voltage distribution and the strain distribution were varied significantly each other. Therefore, it has proved that PVDF films are available for the defect detecting method.
