Abstract

An equity initiative of the Current Procedural Terminology® Editorial Panel includes recognition that female pelvic examinations have a greater practice expense (eg, the cost of providing speculums and chaperones) than evaluation and management (E/M) services that do not include a female pelvic examination. To provide a means of reporting the increased practice expense, new add-on code 99459 (pelvic examination) may be reported for services provided on and after January 1, 2024. This article reviews the appropriate use of code 99459. Reporting in conjunction with a preventive medicine E/M service Reporting in conjunction with a problem-oriented E/M service Utilization instructions Assigned relative value units (RVUs) for 99459
