Abstract

Hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) remain the most frequent nosocomial infection in critical ill patients and bring about higher hospitalization cost, longer length of stay in hospital and increased mortality. In 2016, with advances in evidence-based guideline methodology and analysis of new studies related to the diagnosis and treatment of HAP and VAP, Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and American Thoracic Society (ATS) have collaborated to create updated guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of HAP and VAP based on last HAP/VAP guidelines published in 2005.
