Abstract

When a thin flat pate is released in still air, the plate sometimes falls aslant and automatically set into a rotational motion. This phenomenon is called autorotation. In this study, we calculated flow around an rotating elliptic cylinder in the uniform flow which is set in the analogous condition of auto rotation by using a discrete vortex method and investigated unsteady fluid-dynamic force acting on the elliptic cylinder. The comparison of the drag and lift coefficient with the calculations in the case of no point vortices shed and in the case of fixed angle of attack could found that in the state that autorotation is occur, the unsteady fluid-dynamic force, drag and lift, acting on the body get a synergistic effect between the fluid-dynamic force caused by cylinder rotation and one caused by vortex shedding from the cylinder.
