Abstract

Strain checkers have been used mainly to measure the strain for bridge maintenance. The purpose of this study is to establish a defect detection method using this device. When the cyclic load was applied to a specimen with an artificial defect, we measured the strain distribution around the defect on the reverse side of a specimen. The specimens used in the experiments have a notch as an artificial defect, and the effect of notch geometry on the strain distribution was clarified. As a result, it was proved that a stress stethoscope can be used for the defect detecting method.
