Abstract

According to shamanist myths in the Korean mainland and Cheju Island, the creation God creates order out of chaos in natural phenomena and human affairs. He separated the sky and the earth, split the sun and moon to create stars, made day and night, separated living spirits from ghosts and let them live in the present world and the other world, respectively. This chapter narrates a myth about bride Ch'ŏngjŏng and her sacrificial death for love. Ch'ŏngjŏng's was the Fire God, and her mother was the Earth Goddess. The groom said to the bride before leaving, 'If a person with a short haircut comes from the hill at noon tomorrow, then consider that I have died. 'Then he gave the bride a Saltchŏkmili as a keepsake. The bride cried out loud fitting her ring on the groom's finger.Keywords: Ch'ŏngjŏng; earth Goddess; fire God; sacrificial death; Saltchŏkmili
