Abstract

The investigation of various stainles steels such as 13%Cr, V2A, V4A, V6A, V16A, 18%Cr-12%Ni-13%Mo, 16%Cr-13%Ni-3%Mo, 18%Cr-8%Ni-4%Mo-4%Cu steels for pulp, dye and1b eaching industries was made for the acid-resistivity at high temperatures and in boiling solutions of various inorganic, organic acids and salts solutions for 5 hours. It is on account of the general superior corrosion-resistance of the V2A steel, coupled with their good mechanical properties and the ease with which they can be manipulated and fabricated into all manner of plant, that chemical engineers and the chemical industry as a whole are adopting the use of V2A steel in ever increasing quantities.The extraordinary resistance of V2A steel of Nitric acid is of great importance to both makers and users of this acid. V2A steel can be recommended for use with Nitric acid of all strengths and temperature, except in the case of the concentrated at or mean boiling point. While considering nitric acid mention may also be made of the resistance of V2A steel to “Mixed acid” i.e, mixture of Nitric and sulphuric acid. Mixed acid has given the same results which we have obtained in connection with the effect of a variety of different HNO3-H2SO4 mixture, at various temperature, upon V2A steel.Sulphurous acid and vapours enter largely into chemical manufacture, a case in point being the bleaching of cellulose for paper. V2A steel is resistant to boiling solutions of sulphur dioxide in water (sulphurous acid) and the condensing vapours above such solution are also without action on the steel (This does not apply if appreciable oxidation to sulphuric acid occurs) V2A steel variety, depending upon circumstances can be, and are being used in connection with sulphite liquors in the digestion of sulphite pulp for the paper industry : Owing to the resistance of V2A steel to acetic acid, acetone and acetic anhydride, these steels have found application in the artificial silk industry, particularly as regards the manufacture of acetate silk.In the textile industry V2A steel has successfully displaced brass and bronze. Another direction in which V2A steel is successfully applied is the manufacture and storage of fine chemicals and pharmacentical products.One well known firm manufacturing chemicals in this country, has installed a large number of steam jackeled pans, storage tanks, pipe line, valves, etc., with V2A steel, for dealing with numerous products, for which they have found the steel eminently satisfactory. The V4A, V6A and other steels will be generally studied as V2A steel.
