Abstract

The phase-inversion technique developed by Loeb-Sourirajan is by far the most popular method to prepare polymeric membranes with an asymmetric structure. In the wet phase inversion process, the cast film of the polymer solution is immersed into a gelation media that is nonsolvent for the polymer. While the film is in the gelation media, solvent–nonsolvent exchange takes place and the polymer solution composition, moving on the triangular phase diagram, crosses the phase boundary line, at which the solution is split into polymer-rich and polymer-lean phases. The polymer in the polymer-rich phase then solidifies. Hence, it is important to know the position of the phase boundary line on the triangular phase diagram. Based on the polymer solution thermodynamics, it is possible to draw the phase boundary line on the triangular phase diagram, when the Flory–Huggins interaction parameters are known.
