Abstract

The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 is an instrument of the ILO. This chapter examines Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 from the point of view of international labour convention. It examines the links between the MLC, 2006 and traditional ILO concepts and approaches to conventions. The chapter focuses on developments which appear particularly relevant to the underlying approaches in the MLC, 2006 that were agreed to in the five years following 2001. The analysis focuses on approaches relating to international labour standards, since, to the extent that these instruments were considered sufficiently up to date, their substance is to be found in the MLC, 2006 itself. Having witnessed the five years of discussion in the preparation of the MLC, 2006, the chapter pays tribute to the power of tripartism in enabling the best solutions to be worked out and agreed upon.
