Abstract
An objective assessment of States' obligations under the CEDAW thus necessitates a precise and detailed description of the substantive provisions of the CEDAW, including the scope of the definition of non-discrimination under the Convention, and nature of such obligations. In carrying out its functions, the CEDAW Committee provides interpretations of the Convention through examining State reports and issuing concluding observations and general recommendations. Egypt's obligations as a party to CEDAW can be summarised as the obligation to pursue the goal of eliminating discrimination on the basis of gender, without delay, using all appropriate means and measures. Specific measures outlined in article include 'negative obligations', namely refraining from any act or practice of discrimination and 'positive obligations' including legal measures, such as the prohibition of discrimination in the constitution and in legislation, revoking discriminatory penal provisions, and guaranteeing the legal and judicial protection of the rights of women.
