Abstract

Cannon urged his comrades to 'take out of our minds the last bit of personal malice' and 'in the true spirit of revolutionary comradeship, join together in this work'. Cannon was more blunt and described the new Workers' Party (WP) 'not as a self-sufficient party, but as a cover for the underground movement and as one step in our fight for legality'. The WP was 'completely under the domination of the Communist Party (CP)' as its 'legal expression'. Melech Epstein, an official in the Jewish Socialist Federation (JSF) and later the CP, described the convention as 'not a smooth affair'. In his book, he quoted Salutsky as follows: 'on the first day of the convention, the old crowd was not only in evidence but in control'. According to a report at the time by Ludwig Katterfeld, the Workers' Party had a 17-member executive committee. Keywords: Cannon; Communist Party (CP); fight for legality; Jewish Socialist Federation (JSF); Salutsky; Workers' Party (WP)
