Abstract

The development of small modular reactors (SMR) has been pursued worldwide since the early success of small reactors for military marine propulsion applications in the 1950s. In recent years, there has been a global resurgence of interest in SMRs from both system designers and potential customers. Several designs that are in various stages of development, under construction, or in operation are briefly described in this chapter. The designs are categorized by their choice of coolant technology into four groups: water-cooled SMRs, gas-cooled SMRs, liquid metal-cooled SMRs, and molten salt-cooled SMRs. Key features and deployment approach for several designs are presented. The chapter is concluded with a vision of future trends in the global development and deployment of SMRs and a list of resources for additional information.
