Abstract

Medical textiles provide us with cost-effective ways of protecting both hospital healthcare workers and patients from harmful microorganisms. Reusable medical textiles materials which are able to inactivate pathogens and reduce the incidence of infection and transmission have been gaining increased attention. Protective textiles such as surgical masks, caps, gowns, etc. and hospital linen are necessary to ensure antimicrobial safety. This is why limiting the adverse effects of microorganisms on textiles has become of such importance, particularly within the medical textiles industry. The COVID-19 coronavirus epidemic has brought significant losses to society over the last few years, and it is high time that focus was placed on the future development and availability of protective medical textiles. This chapter highlights the use of natural biopolymers as well as synthetic polymer and fibres in the design and production of medical textiles for life-saving risk management.
