Abstract

There have been growing interests in soliton modes in unstable media.In this report, experimental studies on nonlinear evolution of unstable waves in an electron-beam plasma are reviewed.A recent work showed the following: The initial disturbance exponentially grew first, became stable in the nonlinear stage, and then decreased.As the result a solitary structure was formed.The envelope is empirically given by k1 sech [k1 (z-z0)], where k1 is the linear growth rate and zo the position of the maximum amplitude.
