2-Methoxy-4-propylphenol, a Potent New Enhancer of Lures for the Japanese Beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)1

Abstract

2-Methoxy-4-propylphenol (2M4PP), substituted for eugenol in mixtures with phenethyl propionate (PEP) + eugenol, 7:3, and PEP + eugenol + geraniol, 3:7:3, was as effective as eugenol in attracting Japanese beetles, Popillia japonica Newman. Furthermore, mixtures containing 2M4PP were as effective as eugenol in enhancing the attractiveness of Japonilure, the synthetic female sex pheromone. 2M4PP is the only substance as yet described that can replace eugenol in enhancing the attractiveness of lures for P. japonica .
