Abstract

The risk of serious injury to anaesthetized patients is low. However, most serious injuries are avoidable, and many of these injuries can result in a profound impairment of the patient's quality of life. The incidence of other injuries is greater. Although their consequences are generally less momentous, many of these injuries are also avoidable. Knowledge of potential injuries is an essential first step in implementation of strategies to reduce risk and improve safety.
