Abstract

The chemistry and physics of high-performance PAN-based carbon fibers are summarized. Performance requirements are addressed and put into context with structural features, which in turn are discussed with precursor issues. Special emphasis is put on precursor polymer synthesis, fiber spinning, oxidation, carbonization, and graphitization as well as on the surface treatment of carbon fibers. Complementary, structural issues are discussed within the context of carbon fiber properties, applications, and future trends.
