Abstract
In evidence based medicine decisions are made on the basis of proven effectiveness. Assessing the effectiveness is carried out by statistical methods on the basis of clinical trials. The term ‘evidence based medicine’ was introduced in the early 90's by Gordon Guyatt and David Sackett at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. In Germany, the concept was first introduced in 1995. The full combination of three components: physician, patient, and evidence define evidence based medicine. Approach of evidence-based medicine in practice is the formulation of a research question, identification of relevant literature, evaluation of evidence and selection, implementation and evaluation. The bio-medical literature databases constitute the basis for the evidence. The currently largest electronic medical databases are PUBMED and EMBASE.
