Abstract

Fluoride crystals have been studied for a long time and many review papers have been produced in the past to give the state of the art in this field. So, concerning this past work, the present chapter only describes the materials which gave rise to the most interesting laser results or which could be reconsidered in the near future because of specific applications or because of new forthcoming technologies. The chapter first concentrates on general considerations of the crystal growth, structural, optical and thermo-mechanical properties of fluoride crystals, then discusses the investigation and development of some rare-earth doped and undoped fluoride crystals for up-to-date laser applications such as XPW pulse cleaning, RGB colour display and high-power laser chains.
