Abstract

The link between diary-keeping and the measurement of time is embodied by the Huygens brothers, who together represent the technical progress and cultural change of the seventeenth century. There was no causal relationship between the invention of the pendulum clock and the development of the modern diary, but they sprang from the same source: the wish to know, measure and describe the world. Christiaan Huygens made great improvements to the technology of time measurement. The diary kept by Constantijn Huygens Jr, particularly his custom of making a daily report of his activities, testifies to his careful management of time. The two Huygens brothers, Christiaan and Constantijn Jr, were both specialists in time management, each in his own way: one as an inventor of clocks and the other as the writer of a modern diary.
