Abstract

Catalytic pyrolysis is one of the solutions for upgrading traditional bio-oil from biomass fast pyrolysis into a better-quality liquid biofuel in terms of heating value, oxygen content, viscosity and stability. Catalytic pyrolysis is achieved by introducing catalyst into a fast pyrolysis process to induce several catalytic reactions on the pyrolysis vapour, leading to products that are either partially or entirely different from the non-catalytic bio-oil. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of several parameters known to influence the catalytic pyrolysis process and products. This includes the feedstock compositions, catalyst types and properties as well as the catalytic process variables. Also included in this chapter is the basic characteristics of bio-oil produced from catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass.
