Abstract

Abstract Dy 3+ and Dy 3+ /Tm 3+ -codoped tellurite–zinc glasses have been synthesized and studied by absorption and emission spectra. The Judd–Ofelt intensity parameters, energy transfer microparameters and efficiency have been determined and discussed. Intense 2.9 μm emission in Dy 3+ /Tm 3+ -codoped zinc–tellurite glasses was achieved under 800 nm laser diode excitation that confirms effective energy transfer from Tm 3+ to Dy 3+ ions. Possible energy transfer mechanism has been discussed based on the near- and mid-infrared emission spectra and the energy transfer microparameters. These results indicate that Dy 3+ /Tm 3+ -codoped tellurite–zinc glasses can be a potential medium for mid-infrared laser.
