Abstract

This study aims to characterize patients with somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs) admitted to an inpatient clinical pathway at a pediatric hospital who had both medical and psychiatric evaluations as part of standardized care. The data analysis sought to identify the frequency of pertinent aspects of history, comorbid medical and mental health conditions, and duration of symptoms. Given the challenge associated with both the diagnosis and treatment of SSRDs, becoming familiar with relevant presenting features will allow pediatric providers to more confidently identify patients with SSRDs and avoid unnecessary medical workups and delays in diagnosis.
