Abstract

It is unclear whether types of trauma differentially predict the severity of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in youth. Some, but not all, studies link sexual abuse (SA) to especially severe PTSS. Inconsistent findings for physical abuse (PA) and neglect produce a tenuous link to PTSS, but polyvictimization is consistently associated with the most severe PTSS. The current study aims to quantify the association between trauma type, including polyvictimization, and caregiver- or youth-reported measures of PTSS severity.
