Abstract

Evidence suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected children’s mental health. The emergency department (ED) is often the first point of contact with a physician for youth who are experiencing suicidal thoughts or have attempted suicide. This study compares trends in ED visits for suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) among individuals in South Carolina (SC) ages 5 to 24 years, before (March to December 2019) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (March to December 2020).
