Abstract

The focus of this workshop is on identifying and formulating the requirements of a European GRID Infrastructure for eLearning. TOWARDS A EUROPEAN LEARNING GRID INFRASTRUCTURE is a series of workshops organised by the Learning GRID of Excellence Working Group (LeGE-WG), which is a thematic network sponsored by the Information Society Technologies Program (IST) of the European Commission in order to facilitate the emergence of a European GRID infrastructure for e-Learning. The focus of this workshop is on identifying and formulating the requirements of a European GRID Infrastructure for eLearning. GRID technologies define a new powerful computing paradigm by analogy to the electric Power Grid. Based on the Internet, the GRID seeks to extend the scope of distributed computing to encompass large-scale resource sharing, and shared use of data, computational, information and knowledge resources. A European Learning Grid Infrastructure can address and advance current eLearning solutions through the co-operative use of geographically distributed computing and educational resources as a single e-learning environment. Such an infrastructure will allow a choice of pedagogical methods, multimedia contents, and innovative technological solutions while bringing about new innovative learning strategies to satisfy the demands of lifelong learning and ever changing new specialised skills in the volatile European market. The 1st LeGE-WG workshop on the TOWARDS A EUROPEAN LEARNING GRID INFRASTRUCTURE series focuses, but is not limited: analysing the economic, technological and pedagogical challenges underpinning the use of GRID technologies for eLearning. identifying learning solutions that can take advantage of GRID technologies. identifying the challenges to existing educational and didactical models. identifying and formulating the requirements of a European GRID Infrastructure for eLearning.
