Abstract

We propose a method for cell manipulation using the magneto-Archimedes effect as a technique to rapidly assemble a large number of cells. Gd-DOTA was supplemented to the culture medium to enhance the diamagnetic property of the cells. First, fluorescent beads with similar property to cells and then actual cells were manipulated by our originally developed device consisting of two pairs of electromagnets. Fluorescent beads were able to be aggregated at arbitrary positions by regulating the balance of current flowing through coils of the electromagnets although the range was limited. We also succeeded in forming a conical-shaped aggregate of NIH-3T3 cells within two hours.
