Abstract

An instrument was designed and constructed which is used to calibrate the graduated scales up to one meter directly with wave-length of light. To compare a mechanical displacement with the wave-length by fringe counting, a mo dified Kosters' interferometer is used in this instrument, whose reflecting mirrors are replaced by the corner-cube reflectors so as to keep a fringe pattern in correct optical condition even when the carriage having a reflector on it moves. The lines of scale are viewed with a photo-electric microscope, and the position of moving reflector is related with that of lines of scale by the application of Eppenstein's principle. As the fixed corner-cube reflector is able to change the position in a direction of incident beam, it is possible to measure the scales longer than the coherent length of light source. With a view to ensure the constancy of temperature, the instrument is set in an alminum case with double wall in which sheets of Molto-pren are inserted. The accuracy of this instrument was 0. 05μ in the full length.
