Abstract

Extensive literature review revealed imidazoles nucleus containing compounds are promising antimicrobial and anticancer drug candidates. Novel imidazole compounds (IVa-n) were green chemistry product produced by microwave oven assisted synthesis method, characterized and tested for their antimicrobial and antitumor activities. The compounds obtained were identified by FT-Infra red spectroscopy, 1H-Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Gas chromatography- mass spectroscopy data, elemental analysis and were also screened for in-vivo antimicrobial activity. In vivo antibacterial activity were carried out against pathogens like E. coli. P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and B .subtilis as well as in vivo antifungal activity were carried out against pathogens like A. niger and C. albicans. Compounds IVf, IVh, IVi, IVn and IVm exhibited potent and broad spectrum antimicrobial activity as compared to standard drugs Linezolid and Ketoconazole for antimicrobial and antifungal activity respectively. Compound IVa, IVb, IVc, IVe, and IVi were tested, found active against four out of sixty human tumor cell lines.
