Abstract

`Challenges in science' is the title of a one-day conference on Friday 19 March 1999, being sponsored by Pfizer and taking place at the King's School, Canterbury. The conference is intended for A-level science students from schools and colleges and it is hoped that all areas of science will be included, as well as technology. There will be lectures from eminent scientists in addition to shorter oral presentations from students, with two formal poster sessions during the course of the day. The posters will comprise accounts of experimental investigations carried out by the participants or reviews from literature searches on topical research in industry and academia. An exhibition of scientific books from well known publishers is also planned. To involve as large a number of schools/colleges as possible, invitations are restricted to two students plus a member of staff per institution. Although the date for initial responses has passed, the deadline for abstracts is Friday 29 January 1999. Full details of the conference may be obtained from Dr M Afzal, The King's School, Canterbury, Kent CT1 2ES (tel: 01227 595693/595676, fax: 01227 595676, e-mail: ma@kings-school.co.uk). Students at King's School are involved in the production of a science magazine which also publishes material written by students from elsewhere. More information on the availability of this chemistry-based publication can be obtained from Dr Jonathan Allday at the above address. The 1999 Edinburgh Science Festival (3 - 18 April) consists of around 250 events and the programme is usually published in January. Among the main themes for the talks are: Clean technology - water works and biospheres; the Car - cleaning the car, new fuels and Formula One; Life in space - when and how we will get there; Visions of the future - what technology will bring; Science film festival - technology in the movies. The Science Festival schools programme will run from 25 January until 19 March.
