Abstract

There have been lots articles with regard to Taitung's electorates as the supporters of Pan-Blue camp. Indeed, it is according to the results from national to local elections in recent years. Taitung is described as peripheral county with lower income level, under average level of educational background, with agriculture-oriented economy and with multiple ethnicities. It is rarely happened for party alternation. These factors always confuse the real phenomenon when most western counties are regarded as the supporters of Pan-Green camp under the same conditions. Taitung county could be divided into three parts according to the population: Han dominant area (Taitung city, Lu Ye, Kwan Shan, Chi Shang, Tai Ma Li, Green Island, Bei Nan), aborigines dominant area (Yien Ping, Hai Dwan, Ching Fong, Da Zan, Orchid Island ) and ethnic balanced area (Dong He, Chang Bin, Da Wu、and Cheng Kong). Generally speaking, Hakka and Holo support the DDP, whose suppot1ers have stronger party identification. Aborigines and Taiwanese Mainlanders support Pan-Blue camp, no matter who candidates are. Each ethnicity has its own space frontier that decides the party domain and local characters. This paper would supplement the relevant studies and be the first discussion about peripheral politics.
