Abstract

The TMS William Hume-Rothery Award was initiated in the late 1960s at the instigation of the TMS Committee on Alloy Phases. W.B. Pearson had, as a graduate student, done collaborative research with Hume-Rothery, who was one of the pioneers in studying the factors that control alloy structure and phase formation. Pearson, with no idea that he would be the first to receive the award, was at that time an active member of the Committee on Alloy Phases and was one of the leaders in the effort to have the award estab-lished.
