Abstract
The Waldo E. Smith Award is one of the newest AGU honors and is awarded for extraordinary service to geophysics. In 1983 it was presented, for the first time, to Waldo Smith in recognition of his lifetime devotion and services to the American Geophysical Union and to geophysics in general. Truly, he exemplified the motto of AGU, which begins with the words “Unselfish Cooperation …” Much the same can be said for the second Waldo E. Smith awardee, whom we honor tonight, Thomas Francis Malone.
