Abstract

This thesis aims to investigate the postmodern writing of Mo Yan's fiction. It examines the story, the technique, and the discourse, hoping to find the characteristic of Mo Yan's fiction. In the terms of the story, there was three characteristics can be found in Mo Yan's fiction, unreality, absurdity, and flatness. In the traditional theory of fiction, story can be defined a series of methodic matter which was designed according to rationality. But in the unreality story, unusual figures and matters was everywhere, and the author would not unriddle to the readers. The absurdity story was broken the traditional design of the plot, creating a lot of illogical plot in the fiction. The flatness story was subverted the design of the traditional fiction, thought to make the readers can not found the keynote in the story. In the terms of the technique, there was also three characteristics can be found in Mo Yan's fiction, black humor, parody, and collage. In Mo Yan's black humor fiction, he used the comparison of opposite matters, the weird humorous out of the coolness statement which was lack of the judgement of morality to reach the goal of criticize reality. In the parody fiction, he imitated the plot of the classical text. And in the collage fiction, he combined the different type of literature, inconsecutive plot in one story. In the terms of the discourse, there was still three characteristics can be found in Mo Yan's fiction, catachresis, the ineffable, and intrusive narrator. In Mo Yan's catachresis fiction and ineffable fiction, he use the ambiguity of the language, to create many catachresis discourse. And in some of Mo Yan's fiction, he would use a lot of intrusive narrator to announce to the readers that all of the fiction were fabrication. As one of the Chinese avant-garde fiction writers, Mo Yan's design of his works was tend to reflect the unique environment of Chinese society.
