Abstract

The recipient of the 1974 Harvey A. K. Whitney Lecture Award presents his personal views on continuing education, professional competence and proposed goals for the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Mandatory continuing education requirements are criticized. It is argued that a “Pharmacist Standard for Professional Competence” should be developed, and that a national body should be established for developing and approving continuing education programs for pharmacists. Expanded objectives for ASHP, the author believes, will be a successful venture for the Society but will create difficulties in relationships with other pharmacy organizations.
