Abstract

This paper examined the Korea-Japan negotiations on the issue of Japanese Ashes in Seoul(Korea), domestic public opinion, and its historical meanings. Previous studies have focused on the fact that this issue is closely related to the issue of Korean remains(ashes) in Korea-Japan relations. While accepting these achievements, this paper tried to move on to a more advanced discussion at the following two points.<BR>First, by actively utilizing government documents, this paper tried to examine the excavation of the remains of Dongguk University and Hongje-dong, and the process of negotiations with Japan more delicately. Second, Paying attention to this issue, especially the accident on damage to the memorial tower in the charnel house, this paper tried to reveal what kind of reaction it caused and what it meant. e issue of Japanese Ashes at this time was a measure of Korean society’s feelings toward Japan. It was also a barometer to examine how “normalized” relations between Korea and Japan.
