Abstract

This study mainly focuses on the representative in DPRK of The State Committee for Foreign Economic Relations of Soviet Union(GKES) in late 1950s. In the middle of 1957, the Soviet government organized GKES, which was directly attached to cabinet. The organization of GKES was connected to the enhanced policy of foreign economic cooperation in Khrushchev era. And the mission of GKES representative in DPRK was management of all kinds of economic cooperation between DPRK and Soviet in late 1950s, including remaining portion of grant aid to DPRK. But this was not kind of authoritative organization which could exercise its influence over the economic relationship. And the documents of GKES representative in DPRK showed us the overall situation of industrial economic cooperation in late 1950s. Grant aid was not finished until 1959, and the offering the credit assistance was already began in the middle of 1950s. As was discussed in the reports of GKES representative regarding the machine industry, the importance of Soviet economic cooperation in the industrial policy was still great in the implementation of the first five year plan. By examining the formation and activities of the GKES representative in DPRK, this study aims to understand the whole picture of DPRK-Soviet economic cooperation in late 1950s.
