Abstract

Taiwan won three gold medals in men's tennis team, women's tennis double and the men and women's tennis mix in the Asia Games 2010. In addition, there are many Taiwan professional tennis players in the world's top fifty rankings so that Taiwan can advance into one of the top countries in the international tennis field. At last, it is necessary to investigate fully about the track and strategy of tennis' development in order to keep its sustainable development. This study focuses on the tennis development during martial law implement period (1949-1987), and explores tennis scenarios from the perspectives of education, sociology and military history in Taiwan. The promotion of tennis activity was not very successful at the initial stage of martial law era. There are several reasons to the result such as: 1. the political unstable situation between Mainland China and Taiwan; 2. being at the economic depression period; 3. expensive equipments; and 4. very few people who recognize tennis as a sport. However, during the later stage of martial law era the former situation had been improved. More and more international competitions were held in Taiwan and this made Taiwan's diplomacy improve. Tennis was accepted and recognized as an international sport. As a result, tennis was one of the most popular sports in Taiwan at the time. Tennis in Taiwan has become a sport for all from the nobility, even nowadays ranked a higher position in Asia. It was a long path to come after through government policies, community promotions, and enthusiast people's hard work for it to shine internationally. We should be familiar with the tennis development process in Taiwan and grateful of the predecessor's hard work. At last, we need to establish a more comprehensive training system in order to train our next generation within the tennis domain. In the future, Taiwan then may be known for excellent tennis sport and players.
