Abstract

The topic of this thesis is the military takeover and reorganization of Chinese Navy in Taiwan. First, we discussed the history of Chinese Navy and Japanese naval constructions and formation in Taiwan before the end of the World War II. Second, we discussed the preparation, course and result of the military takeover in Taiwan. Finally, we discussed how Chinese Navy achieved the military takeover influenced by Japanese Military, Taiwanese people and Government of the Republic of China. After the establishment of the Republic of China, Chinese Navy developed slowly because of political instability and factional struggle. Although the Northern Expedition of KMT was succeed, during the Golden Decade (1927-1936), Chinese Navy had no extensive development. On the other hand, Japanese Government built many navy constructions such as Keelung, Kaohsiung, and Magong bases in Taiwan almost the same time. On the verge of military occupation, Nationalist Government (China) understood the importance of Navy strategy of Taiwan, but the preparation was incomplete because of the war. The military takeover of Taiwan conducted under the command of Chiang, Kai-shek, the Supreme Commander of allied forces, China Theater. By the influence of Chiang, Chen-Yi was appointed as governor of the Taiwan Provincial Administrative Executive Office leading the military takeover of Taiwan. Lee, Shi-Jia, Navy's second fleet commander, presided over the mission of Navy takeover. Since manpower shortage, Japanese military helped to guard and check the materials. Japanese naval material and equipment concentrated mostly in Kaohsiung. Chinese Navy also supported the work of port cleanup, fortress receiving, and the repatriation of Japanese. They had to contact with Japanese military and Taiwanese people. Japanese helped to proceed, however; they also had possession, damaged and sold of military products. Taiwan nationals of Japanese Navy and other Taiwanese people were important in Military Takeover, too. During this period, the reorganization and recruiting of Chinese Navy made the impaction of the personnel. Finally, Chinese Navy started the management and organization in Taiwan when the Office of the Taiwan and Penghu Area was established in Zuoying, Kaohsiung.
