Abstract

This chapter focuses on unmanned aerial system (UAS) applications in civil infrastructure with emphasis on structural health monitoring (SHM). Recently, UASs have gained significant interests throughout variety of fields due to the advances in UAS technology, including civil engineering domain. Together with the computer vision and machine learning techniques, UAS technology can be used as an assistive tool that could automate the current structural inspection and monitoring procedure. In this chapter, SHM applications using UAS technology are presented including reconstructing three-dimensional models of civil infrastructures, finding and localizing visual damages such as cracks and corrosions, automatically recognizing structural components, measuring dynamic response, and performing system identification. The results of these researches showed how UAS can potentially improve current structural inspection and monitoring process.
