Abstract

At a ceremony with the theme A Global Salute to a Decade of during the American Chemical Society national meeting in Boston, 19 ACS local sections received Phoenix Awards for their 1997 National Chemistry Week (NCW) activities. An additional 16 ACS local sections received honorable mentions. Randy Wedin, who was the first organizer of National Chemistry Day—the predecessor of NCW—presided over the awards ceremony. He was assisted by Kathleen M. Thompson, manager of the ACS Office of Community Activities; Shirley A. Ford, NCW staff associate; Paul Anderson, ACS immediate pastpresident; and Ed Wasserman, ACS president-elect. As in years past, all 188 ACS local sections participated in NCW. For the 1997 celebration, the NCW office sent out Planet Chemistry, an activity booklet of four experiments related to water testing.
